The Do(wnload) List: A Simpler Way to Get Things Done
Ever feel like your to-do list is more of a "never-ending and overwhelming doom scroll of tasks"? You're not alone. As someone who's tried dozens of digital task managers and felt the overwhelm of endless checkboxes, I want to share a different approach that I like to call: The Do(wnload) List.
What's a Download List?
Think of it as your brain's daily download – not everything you could do, just what you will actually do today. It's the difference between staring at an entire library of books versus opening just one book to read right now.
Instead of maintaining a massive digital to-do list that grows faster than kudzu, you're going to:
1. Pick 2-3 tasks for today
2. Write them down on paper (yes, actual paper!)
3. Focus on just those tasks

Why Paper?
Pixels are Overwhelming!
Listen, I love Notion and other digital tools as much as the next person, but sometimes our neurodivergent brains need a break from the endless possibilities of digital spaces. A simple piece of paper, a Post-it note, or a tiny A6/A7 notebook creates a physical boundary around your tasks.
There's something magical about having just three lines of text in front of you instead of an infinite scrolling list. It's like turning down the volume on all the other tasks screaming for attention.
The Time Training Game
Here's where it gets interesting – and don't worry, we're making this fun, not stressful. Start guessing how long each task might take. No pressure, no judgment, just your best guess. Maybe you think writing that email will take 20 minutes, or organizing your desk will take an hour.
Write these guesses down next to your tasks. Over time, you'll start to notice patterns:
- "Oh, emails always take twice as long as I think"
- "Huh, I can actually finish this thumbnail design in half the time I expected"
This isn't about beating yourself up over wrong guesses – it's about gathering data that helps you choose between picking two or three tasks for tomorrow. Think of it like a friendly weather forecast for your day – sometimes it's spot on, sometimes it's way off, but it gets more accurate over time.
Why 2-3 Tasks? Because Your Brain Will Thank You
For many of us with neurodivergent minds, seeing "just" three items feels doable. It feels like taking a deep breath. It feels like permission to focus without the guilty whispers of "but what about all those other things?"
Remember: You're not limiting what you can do in a day – you're setting yourself up to actually complete what you plan to do. And that feeling when you strike through a completed task? It's a good dopamine – almost better than coffee. There's something magical about that physical act of crossing off a task. scratch, Done! ✓
Getting Started
1. Grab your paper of choice (Post-it, small notebook, whatever feels right)
2. Before bed or first thing in the morning, choose 2-3 tasks from your digital to-do list for the day
3. Write them down with your time guesses
4. Keep it where you can see it
5. At the end of the day, take a quick note of how long things actually took
That's it. No apps to download, no systems to learn, no complicated workflows and no paid subscriptions. Just you, a piece of paper, and a more focused way to move through your day.
Remember, this isn't about perfection – it's about progress and getting those tasks done! Some days you'll nail all three tasks, some days you won't even do a single task. Both are okay. What matters is that you're building a system that works with your brain instead of against it.
Ready to give it a try? Grab that paper and start your first Do(wnload) List. Your future self will thank you.
